Yet Another View of Sing for Soldiers

By

Gary Drake

I wanted to get my thoughts down while they are still fresh and the adrenaline is still pumping!  WOW – what a great morning of worthwhile work by 21  men from the Little Apple Chorus.  We sang three songs at each of five services on Fort Riley.

Installation Chaplain, COL Kenneth Sampson made all the arrangements with each congregation, and set up a time schedule that worked like a clock!  Speaking of work . . . I don’t know about you, but I came home very tired.  It was work and it was very worthwhile!   The smiles, the applause, the tears, and the standing ovations poured back to the chorus participants time and again.

At one service, we received (at least from my recollection) our first standing ovation for a Sunday church sing-out!  What a wonderful reception and feeling we were given by every performance on this date.  The standing ovation was later out done by another service who gave us multiple standing ovations!

I said there were tears, and indeed it became a challenge for several of us to continue singing when we noticed that a couple of the ladies were in tears when we dedicated a song to the Soldier fighting this war.  Our sing-out was a tribute to the Soldiers and their families.  What an appropriate time, on this 4th anniversary of the attacks on America.

One service was predominately National Guard and Reserve who were on Post preparing for their upcoming deployment for Operation Enduring Freedom.   We learned that we sang for a number of Soldiers who are in preparation to deploy to Iraq and to a number of family members who have a Soldier there now.

Each Little Apple Chorus member was awarded the Commander’s Coin for Excellence by the Installation Chaplain.   His coin appropriately notes “For God and Country ~ Steady ….Strong … Unity over self!”  As in barbershop, it is steady strong unity that brings us together for God and Country.   Thanks to Sunflower Bank of Junction City for providing the morning break of rolls and juice and to Chaplain Sampson for bottled water.

Gentlemen, I would hope that we might do this again . . . it was a tribute to the fine men and women in our Army and their families.

Thank you to all who were able to participate!
