The singing of the choruses and quartets in the Fall Convention and Contests in Des Moines during the weekend of October 7-9 was enjoyed by seven chapter members and their wives – Bill and Marilyn Bunyan, Harvey and Janet Kiser, Terry and Karen Nanninga, Bob and Telva Swenson, Leonard and Sharon Purvis, Bob and Telva Swenson, Don and Joan Thomson, and John and Karen Trail. 31 quartets competed and 650 men sang in the 14 choruses. We enjoyed hearing songs we have sung as well as hearing new ones. Bob did his usual great job of being the convention registrar with the help of Telva and daughter Beth.
Take 4 of the Kansas City area, Lincoln, Nebraska and Frank Throne is the CSD Fall 2005 quartet champion. Two of the members are father and son - tenor, Rick Kready and lead, Jeff Kready. Saturday evening we had the pleasure of hearing the champion quartets and choruses again. Also, we heard CSD 2005 champion quartet – Vocal Spectrum, the 6th place finalist at the Salt Lake City International Convention.
The top two scoring choruses were very close. A total of nine points separated the first place chorus, Heart of America from Kansas City and the second place chorus, Voices of America from St. Joseph. How exciting! Heart of America qualifies to represent the Central States District at the International Chorus Contest next July in Indianapolis. Voices of America has an excellent chance to be one of the 12 wild card choruses at Indianapolis. Catalyst of Des Moines is CSD’s senior quartet representative for the Senior Quartet Competition at the Mid-Winter Convention, Sacramento in January 15-22, 2006.
Both AA and AAA choruses sang. The AA choruses are from chapters with 40 members or more and the AAA choruses have 75 members or more. There were choruses with as few as 18 members and others with as many 86. Nine of the 14 choruses came from AA chapters. Five choruses had between 18 and 32 members on stage for an average of 25 members per chorus. What do you think about our chapter doing this next fall?
