TEAMWORK I have been thinking a lot lately about the work that we get done in our chapter. It is quite amazing when you think about the things that we accomplish. It is quite easy to think sometimes that these things just happen with little or no interaction from members or their very supportive wives. Every time we do a show in the spring, the most overwhelming moment for me is when the show is done and we are gathering our things backstage frantically trying to get to the Afterglow so as not to miss the "rest of the show" there. I become quite overwhelmed as to what has just happened and the work it has taken to put together and execute a show like we have done. We are truly a rich chapter. We have many men (and wives) with the talents needed to pull off a show like we do. We don't do too shabbily in all of our other endeavors as well. Just think about those Sunday sing-outs during the summer. Ask Mike Sexton or Bob Ridley (or anyone else that has ever planned and scheduled those things) and I am sure they would tell you that is no small task. Have you ever stopped to think that we usually sing in about 12-15 churches on three to four Sunday mornings? Let that one soak in for a minute. Guys, that does not just happen! We are truly a rich chapter when it comes to talent and ingenuity. Now, here is the kicker. Not all members have had a chance to shine. Yes, you are right, there are some members waiting to step forward and prove what they can contribute to the process of being the successful chapter we are. There are a wealth of energies and ideas that we have yet to even see in action. We have not succeeded as a chapter due to the efforts of any one or any group of individuals. The collective efforts of many hardworking people have made this chapter successful. Our success and effort make it possible for us to dream each year about ways that we can do an even better show than we have ever done before. Our successes allow us to make financial commitments to causes that would have been way out of reach for this chapter just ten years ago. There are charter members in our chapter that will tell you of days during which they were worried that there was no money in the chapter piggy bank. We are now able to become aggressively involved in many philanthropic endeavors that support music education and the preservation of |

our hobby. All of this is possible only because of teamwork. An organization like ours will never be successful on the efforts of individuals. Our success has been due to the tireless work of many people wishing to play on a successful team. We will continue to be successful only because each member will find a place where he can contribute to that success and jump in with both feet.Have you had your opportunity yet? Step up and let someone know how you would like to serve. Sure, I know you like to sing and if we didn't have all those voices we wouldn't be successful; after all, that is what we do. But, there are many other tasks that need the hands of a capable person to step up and take charge. I will let you know a secret. The board members of your chapter will not turn down a volunteer. I enjoy playing on this team and look forward to the even greater things we can do in the coming years. |
