Symposium Grants
By Bob Ridley, VP for Chapter Development

As in years past, the Little Apple Barbershop Chorus participated in the June Symposium for area music teachers coordinated by Dr. Jana Fallin of the KSU Music Department.  Although we were not directly involved this year, the chapter again voted to award grants to area music teachers, hopefully making it possible for them to do some things in their music curriculum that would not be possible without outside funding.  There were a total of 26 grant requests submitted; the

total amount requested was $9,958, with requests ranging from "whatever you can spare" to $4500.  Most were in the range of $100 - $300 for purchasing drums, the music memory course which was so popular last year, software, etc.   The board recommended that up to  $2000 be awarded.  Harvey Kiser, Ken Brooks and Bob Ridley are reading the grants, and will recommend those for funding.  As soon as the decisions are made, we'll report the recipients to the chapter.

An Inside Look at a Church Sing-out
Editor's Note:  The following is an email message that was sent to me while I was out of town.  I am reprinting it to provide non-Chorus members with an understanding of what happens on a Sunday morning sing-out

Bart and Preston,

Since you were not at the Barbershop Chorus rehearsal this evening, I thought I'd pass on this information about our up-coming Church sing-out this coming Sunday (July 13).

We are to meet at the Sedalia church (north of Manhattan on Highway 24) around 8:00a.m. to start warming up.  (Those people wishing to car-pool from Manhattan are going to meet in the parking lot north of Dillard's and car-pool on to the Sedalia Church.  Others will just meet up at Sedalia.)

We will sing at the Sedalia Church about 8:45-8:55 and then head on northwest to Clay Center.  Ken Lang says DON'T TAKE THE SHORT CUT, stay on Highway 24 into Clay Center (the short cut road is closed).

We will meet at the Clay Center Christian Church

(1021 Crawford - just a couple of blocks east of the motel/cafe) around 10:00 and sing about 10:05.

The next church is the First Baptist at 5th and Dexter and we'll sing there around 10:30.

The last church in CC will be the Clay Center Wesleyan at 1109 Court Street.  We'll sing there around 11:00.

Bill Lewis has invited the chorus to stop by his home after we finish at the Wesleyan Church for some refreshments.

We'll be singing Sweet Hour of Prayer, This Little Light of Mine and I'll Fly Away.

If you're in town, I hope that you'll be able to join us.

CHORD-ially,

Ken
