International convention (continued) |
Bob's dad was the CSD president sometime in the 50's and later went on to work as a field representative for the Society. Also, maybe Richard Jackson might know the father of another fellow named Jim James, a lead with the San Diego chapter. We met his son. Also, we met a couple from Texas who knew Phillipsburg, Kansas because she grew up in Smith Center. They had at one time lived in Kansas City and he sang in the Heart of America Chorus. 2005 Convention and Contests: Hopefully more of us will be able to go to Salt Lake City next year for 67th convention because it will be held in a marvelous auditorium for the best barbershop music. The contests will not be held in a basketball or hockey team arena. All the shows and contests will be held in the Conference Center, featuring a 21,000-seat auditorium unlike anyplace in the world. The entire Salt Lake Tabernacle could fit in the space between the cushy front seats and the pipe organ. Hundreds of acoustically-synchronized speakers are distributed throughout the auditorium for an audio experience unlike any of us has heard before. So plan to register for next year's convention and contests of July 3 - 10, 2005 by going on line at www.spebsqsa.org/saltlake. |

Name Change for Society: The Society decided to be called the Barbershop Harmony Society. After reviewing survey results and discussions about communicating who we are, it was decided that the general public would better understand us with the new name. The official and corporate name remains as: Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. |
Met Interesting People: In addition to meeting Bob, Bill, Bill and Mike Shepherd, Harvey enjoyed visiting with a fellow barbershopper who was sitting next to him -- Bob Fox. He has been a member since 1961 after his dad took him to the 1959 convention as a kid. |

Quartet News: The Charades By Ken Garwick, tenor |
From Copenhagen, Denmark: Sorry Bart, but there has been no barbershop activity here in Copenhagen. There is an international jazz festival going on, but we have been unable to attend any concerts as we are in math meetings from early in the morning until late in the evening. We did have the opportunity to hear the Danish Brass Band at the opening ceremonies and will hear a string quartet at the closing ceremonies on Sunday. While out walking late last evening we did come |

across a group of musicians from the Andes performing in a large square. They play guitars recorders, and pan flutes. The music is very soothing. They seem to be all over the world as we have seen similar groups in: Baltimore, Maryland: Key West, Florida; London, England; Paris. France; Dublin, Ireland; Moscow, Russia and now here in Copenhagen, Denmark. See you soon. Ken Garwick |
