Summertime: singin' is easy
By Sam Kvasnica, president

InCider Press, a monthly publication,  is the official publication of the Manhattan, Kansas  chapter of the Central States District (CSD) of the Society for Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA).  The Manhattan Chapter is the home of the Little Apple Barbershop Chorus.  The chapter and chorus meet  every Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the First Methodist Church Activity Center on the corner of Poyntz and  6th Street, Manhattan, Kansas.

Summertime means additional hard work for some. Lawn mowing, gardening, house painting and even sports leagues take time and energy.  But, barbershop singing is a respite from all of this. It's fun. It's a welcome diversion.  Don't forget your "fix" every Thursday at 7:30. We're learning some new, exciting music while we keep our church repertoire in readiness.  July is abundant with church engagements.  It is always a privilege to contribute to worship services around our community.  It's enjoyable, too.

At a recent chapter meeting I announced the formation of a Grand Kansas State Fair Chorus.  I just received the song selections for the event on Sunday, September 12. Following are the songs we'll sing in a one hour show: Sweet and Lovely, Hello Mary Lou, Wait 'til the Sun Spines Nellie, Lida Rose, Darkness on the Delta, America the Beautiful, God Bless America, Battle Hymn of the Republic, The Old Songs Medley, Bad Buncha Boys, Hey, Little Baby 0' Mine, Aura Lee, Coney Island Baby/We All Fall Medley. Most of these songs are in our music files.

I hope we have at least 14 Manhattan barbershoppers joining others from around the state of Kansas.  Preliminary estimate is about 90 singers for the show.  Directors are Jim Ellis from the Wichita chapter and Dave Norman from the Hutchinson chapter  The schedule calls for rehearsal at 10:00 a.m. and the show at 12 noon. After that all can go out and enjoy the fair according to individual desires. I think this will provide great public relations value for our hobby.  Let's help make it work.

Just a footnote to say there will not be a chapter board meeting in July.  The next meeting is Monday, August 9.  Have a safe and great summer.
