InCider Press, a monthly publication,  is the official publication of the Manhattan, Kansas  chapter of the Central States District (CSD) of the Barbershop Harmony Society.

The Manhattan Chapter is the home of the Little Apple Chorus.  The chapter and chorus meet  every Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the First Methodist Church Activity Center on the corner of Poyntz and  6th Street, Manhattan, Kansas.

For more information about meetings or joining call or write to the Editor. (see below)

The Autumn Season has just begun.  This is a time to reflect and look forward.  We can plan to continue our chapter’s successes and progress toward new challenges.

Let’s recognize what we do well.  Congratulations to Karen Nanninga for being awarded first place for the best On-line bulletin in Central States District (CSD) and 2nd place in the International On-line contest administered by PROBE (Public Relations Officers and Bulletin Editors).

Next, congratulations to our chapter chorus and quartet members who continue to improve musically and visually.  Members, who had the time, prepared themselves to perform in the CSD Fall convention and contests in Lincoln, NE and are to be commended for their performances.   This type of preparation will continue as we all prepare for the spring show.  New quartets formed for Singing Valentines and have continued singing together.  On July 25, 13 members participated in the Chuck Greene workshop on having “Compellingly Attractive Chapter Meetings.”  Members continue this chapter’s pattern of attending Leadership Academy classes and Harmony University.  Also, the dedication of our members showed when they participated in the Retreat with Clinician Jim Bagby.  Voice sections continue to meet before chapter meetings to improve on the singing and presentation of certain parts of the songs.

We are using learning DVDs and CDs to facilitate the learning of our songs for contest and for next year’s spring show.  Aren’t we surprised when we look at ourselves in the DVD videos?

Our Director, Ken Lang, continues to challenge us to improve by remaining on pitch and singing vowels correctly, among the many other vocal techniques that he teaches us.  Members warm us up vocally each week by having us learn and repeat vocal techniques to improve.

We are following the motto of “Making the Best Better.”  Jim Lindquist reminded me of this 4-H motto as I read his September 15th presentation on “Making a Difference” to the Cooperative Extension Professional’s Organization, Epsilon Sigma Phi when he was presented the 2009 Distinguished Ruby Award.

We will have election of our 2010 officers Thursday, October 22.  These officers, along with your participation, will provide leadership in planning and charting our chapter’s direction for next year.

I close by quoting a paragraph from Jim’s speech.  I think his ideas can be applied to our chapter as we plan to improve our product and reach out to more men.   "This time of discontinuous change creates the need for “unlearning” in Extension (for us, our barbershop chapter). We must be able to change structures and practices, remove barriers and allow our organization to morph in ways that leads to relevance, public (and I say, personal) value, and sustainability. In other words, we have to allow our Extension organizations (our barbershop chapters) to change, so that we can continue to make a difference."  Let keep doing what we do well and continue to “Make the Best Better.” ♪

We do many things well

Harvey Kiser, President
