I think the first time I heard or read of the town Kansas City was on the description of my flight to the USA: Chicago O’Hare, Kansas City International. After some ‘research’ in the Internet I finally decided that Kansas City should be the closest really big city next to my new home. Some days after my arrival here in Kansas, Karen Nanninga, my host mom mentioned that we will have the chance to go to Kansas City on one weekend in October; she added something about ‘‘contest’ and ‘Terry’. I did not think about it and was really happy; I would see a big American city. About one month before the certain weekend I began to realize that there was more than just Kansas City. Terry sang in a Barbershop Chorus, I knew that it looked like all the hard practices of his chorus were for a special event. Finally someone told me that the Little Apple Chorus would have a contest in Kansas City. So far so good. I had heard the Little Apple Chores sometimes during practice. However, the Kansas City contest was another dimension. My first estimate about the Chorus was that it is just a local chorus, just singing for fun. However, after some weeks in the USA I realized that nearly everything is for competitive, from football over choir and band to scholar bowl, so Barbershop is too. The first good aspect of the weekend in Kansas City was that I could leave school early. The arrival was very impressive. I am just familiar with European cities which are nearly all relatively flat. First I saw a small downtown, but after all I saw a big downtown. Kansas City and all the skyscrapers. Back to the aspect of another dimension. A very big hotel (with not enough elevators) and a big music hall were just two parts of the contest. .I was really impressed of the professionalism of the Quartets, the Chorus, the organization and the whole environment. I did not expect such a huge importance of Barbershop; surely a reason is that I heard the word ’Barbershop’ the first time when Karen sent me her first e-mail to time describing family and my new home. But I had never heard a Barbershop Chorus before in my life before I came to the USA. I am really happy that I could join the contest. It is a new discovery for me, of a branch of music I have never heard before and again a new experience. Thank you Terry and Karen and the whole Chorus ! ♪ |
