Working closely with director Ken Lang, Don Thomson was the driving force behind developing what our contest package was going to look like visually. A master at stage presentation, Don's leadership in preparing our movements, make-up, and mental attitude had a great influence in our contest presentation. Don created the handouts showing what our costumes should look like, and helped greatly in getting us all "on the same page" for Kansas City. Congratulations Don, for another fine piece of work, and we know there's more wonderful ideas you're going to be presenting.♪ |

Don Thomson receiving his certificate as Barbershopper of the Month from president Bob Swenson. |

Thank you for the honor of being selected as "Barbershopper of the Month". It is always nice to be recognized by your peers. Thankfully we have a lot of worthy members who have and will be recognized for their efforts on behalf of the chapter. I had had a particularly difficult day the evening Bob announced my name for this honor. This made it especially meaningful. Thank you, Bob, for making the presentation, and thank all of you for your responsiveness and willingness to try new things from time to time. What a great bunch of guys to be associated with!♪ |

From Don Thomson |

I’ve been asked many times from various chorus members to express my thoughts about our chorus competition in K.C. Well, no coach I’ve ever talked to goes into a game or contest of any kind thinking, “We’re gonna lose”. I probably set my bar a little higher than the average member because I’m the ‘coach’. We didn’t achieve all of my goals, but we met some of them. We didn’t finish last, which was my number one goal. We improved in all three areas of the scores, and we improved by more than 50 points. Those two were very important to me. We didn’t finish in the top ten (a secret goal), and we didn’t win most improved chorus. (We found out later that we weren’t even entered in that phase). I guess if you look at it, we met three of my five goals, so it’s a positive. Probably most important, is that all who went seemed to come away with a positive attitude, and felt that it was worth the effort. I know that Don and I were pushing you guys pretty hard, but I think that you learned to sing with more feeling and more precision than you thought possible six weeks ago. Now for the show. We need to carry all that enthusiasm over into all of our performances AND rehearsals. We need to get the non-contest singers to jump on board and join in the fun that you can have when you ‘feel what you sing’. Thanks go to all you guys that gave your time and effort to make this an enjoyable and memorable event. ♪ |
