Successful programs of CSD chapters were highlighted at the Council of Presidents (House of Delegates) meeting of the CSD Spring Convention.  Bob Swenson appointed me to be our chapter’s representative because of his responsibilities as the Convention’s Registrar.

Don Fuson, President of the CSD, grouped us by geographical areas to start the meeting.  I was with presidents or representatives from Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri.  He asked each group to tell one thing that is going well in our chapters.  I chose to mention our successful recruitment efforts.  Recruitment and retention is emphasized by the Kansas City chapter.  This chapter had a guest night only for former members, and the number of previous members attending was 30+.  Another chapter said they provided a copy of the sheet music of a song to prospective members.  Hopefully the guest would return the next week.  If the guest did not return, that was part of the cost of conducting a guest night.

Here is a list of some the chapter ideas shared from all four groups. provided the show profit to the high school music program, conducted a YMIH (Young Men In Harmony) program, purchased a choral shell for the local high school, and sang the national anthem at public events and at churches.

The common point of these programs that came out in the discussion was: the community effort by the chapter and active involvement of members.

Don asked ‘how do members know about the programs’ in our chapters?’  The consensus was -- by planning and communicating the ideas to all members and then plan to explain them again.  Don said that marketing and communicating clearly involves doing it seven times to potential customers – our members.  These customers, he said, are those who are on the risers and those who are not showing up.

In answer to Don’s question about the purpose of a chapter, the responses by the CSD chapter presidents were:

Sing

Have fun

 Competition

Perpetuate

Congratulations to chapters in the CSD!!  New Member totals are in and CSD is # 2 in the Society with an increase of 74 new members!! We are only slightly behind Northeastern District (NED) by 4 new members!!

This is wonderful news and you all are to be congratulated for your fine works and efforts. Please pass along these congratulations and success  to your chapter members. They are undoubtedly the primary ones that have been out there inviting and encouraging guys to come and visit a chapter meeting. Through their encouragement the new member prospect then discovers the Value, Comradeship and Fun of singing harmony!!

Keep the good work and encouragement going out to the members. Have guest nights inviting new guys and reconnecting with those who have not been attending or have let their membership lapse!

Let us rally together to become the #1 District in the Barbershop Harmony Society!!

Thanks to each of you for all you do! ♪
