I'm so glad that I came to the chapter retreat last Saturday.  It was like my eyes were open at last and I finally "got it".  It was all about how we can make an already good chorus into a Great Chorus, and I want to do all I can to make that happen.  And even though I am a bass, I am going to try to remember to "sing pretty" all the time.  I hope we do this again soon.

I hope that our director, Ken Lang, was happy with our learning.  A good deal of what Scott taught us was what Ken has been trying to tell us all along.  I guess that's the value of having an outsider come and say the same things.

What a great chapter retreat we had on Saturday February 3. Thank you to anyone that helped plan or execute this very fun event. While enjoying our hobby with lots of singing we were instructed in many things that should make us better singers and chapter members. Don't you feel you know your fellow chapter members better?

As the spouse of the editor I get to see the comments that are in this newsletter before the rest of you so I can comment a little differently on the feelings of our members. So far there are no negative comments that I have seen written or have heard at our meetings. Now we need to take to heart the instruction that we received from Scott Spilker.

I would also hope that the discussion groups were a positive experience for each one of us. Let's not allow the board to just let it drop. We need to use this as a springboard to make our chapter better than ever.

Remember anyone is welcome at the board meetings. We have grown in numbers but we still miss having everyone at every rehearsal.  We will only get better if we apply what we were taught. Remember that you can go to Harmony University in St. Joe or district conventions, or even International in Denver. Listen to Barbershop music whenever you can so you get the feel of the great quartets and choruses. Let's all make this the best chorus musically as well as the best in numbers.

What a great retreat we had Saturday, February 3rd!  Director Ken Lang and clinician, Scott Spilker, director of the Homestead Harmonizers, Beatrice, Nebraska helped us hone our craft and presentation style.  As each of us improves our singing and performances, there will eventually be more persons sitting in the McCain seats for our Spring Show.

As Scott said, we need to sing the song instead of having the song sing us.  This will help us improve our performance presentations, our entertainment quality, and music quality.

This retreat should help us better fulfill one of our MISSION statements – to provide quality music performances and entertainment to Manhattan and the surrounding communities.

We received many excellent ideas and suggestions from our director, our clinician and members on how to improve our singing and chapter operation.  Let’s keep working with each other to accomplish our mission and make our organization even a healthier one.

The raves continue.

The focus on singing was fantastic!   We need to do more of this no matter what level we are at in our ability.  I believe everyone wants to get better.  As we all heard - so many of the things weren't new to us - Ken has been telling us a number of his suggestions for years.    I hope that as a chorus we can master several of Scott's suggestions even before the show!

Special thanks to Telva Swenson for her support to feed us all, and to our President Bob for his tremendous organization skills.  A great day well spent and definitely worth doing again!

I thought our Saturday retreat was great.  A wonderful day of camaraderie, singing, and learning.  It was well planned, and our resource person was terrific.  I hope we do this again another time.
