Many kudos to our president, Bob Swenson, for the insight and inspiration to hold our first chapter retreat!  He had a lot of help in putting it together, and those men also deserve great praise.

My initial impression:our keynoter or clinician seemed to be impressed right away while we were warming up. The first thing he said was, “you have the makings of a great chorus”. He heard us singing with focus (breathing, vowel sounds, and articulation) while we were warming up, and when we do that, we can sound like a great chorus.

It seems, however, that after our warm ups we tend for forget the basics of our singing, and get bogged down with notes and words. Once we get by those two obstacles, Ken can bring a lot of good music out of us. Although your rehearsal schedule still shows a few weeks before you are to be off all the music, there is no real reason that you can’t accelerate that schedule. The sooner we are off the music, the more Ken can do with us and the better we sound, and the better we sound, the more fun we have!  Pretty simple formula.

Back to the clinician…didn’t you like his energy?  He also showed us that it is OK to act uninhibited. We can look like we are having fun on the risers and it is OK. We will try to work on this more in the coming weeks.

The show preparation is coming along nicely. Thank you for your cooperation. Everyone should know what their costume is by now. We will have a “dress rehearsal” on March 22nd, so be prepared for that. Be advised that we are going to have a costume change for the second half of the show. This costume will be issued to you at a later date. We have a lot of people working on different part of the show. Thanks to all of you for your efforts.

In the words of Scott Spilker, “that will be a good song for you once you learn it!” This will be a good show for us, too, once we learn the music!  Good learning!

Things to remember

4Find your window and stay in it.
      a. You need to see the director.

      b. The chorus needs to look balanced.
5Look Confident.

      a. The only way you can do this is to have your
           music learned.

       b. You should be able to be asked to stand any
where on the risers and hold our own.

6. Keep a positive attitude.

        a.  The director may ask you to become

             uninhibited (play along with him).

        b.  The director may tell a joke. (laugh)

        c.  The director may get angry with a person or
section (accept the criticism and continue to
             work toward the common goal.)

        d. The director may ask you to perform some
choreography that you have never done
before (give it a try.. Maybe you will like it!)♪
