This will be a rather dull synopsis. I grew up in Kansas City Kansas. My mom played the organ for church and early on my father had toured the North American Continent with the Ararat Shrine band, playing the Bassoon and Sax. Mom had a baby grand in our home and music was a part of our life. Whenever we would go on vacations my father would try to find a musical show of some kind. I remember my first musical was in 1944 to see a road company production of "Oklahoma!" front row center seats.. I also took part in 2 or 3 high school musicals. As a freshman in high school a member of our church to gave me tickets to see what was the forerunner of the Heart of America Chorus at the Musical hall. I was hooked. Never had the opportunity to do any singing in college or during my medical training. In 1978 Pete Cooper and I were having a beer somewhere and we got around to talking about singing and I mentioned that I had heard on the radio of Dev Nelson's ads about the barbershop chorus wanting to get more members, not knowing that Pete was involved. I have enjoyed my association through the years, meeting a great group of men and doing something just for the fun of it. In addition to the camaraderie, I very much enjoy Ken's leadership as director. It has been a privilege to sing with some great voices and the chapter " officialdom" has been tremendous through the years. Gene Klingler Bass 26 year member |

up with the name “September 4”. We sang together until John got so busy with Masterworks and church choirs he had to bow out. Fortunately, we persuaded Leonard to fill in “temporarily”, and he sang with us until Mel’s health prevented him from continuing. We had a lot of fun, and performed for many “old folks” groups in Manhattan and the surrounding areas. I still look forward to Thursday nights (I tell folks it’s my weekly therapy session), and will continue to enjoy barbershopping until my voice or body wears out. Bob Ridley Bari 26 year member ♪ |

The chapter board met Monday evening November 13th at Westbank Townhomes Clubhouse. The board accepted membership applications from what could be a quartet of new members. Terry Smith has been singing lead. Steven Cross is a bass. John Coty could sing tenor in the quartet and Fred Wachsmuth could fill in the holes singing baritone. The board set the charge at $10 per person for the Installation Banquet on December 14th. That is a supplement of about two dollars per person, as the actual cost is about $12. The banquet will follow Christmas performances by VLQ's at various nursing homes. Our wives are welcome to join us for those performances, including joining in the Christmas carols. There was a discussion of plans for a chapter retreat to be held on Saturday, February 3rd. This retreat will provide members an opportunity to have input about plans for chapter activities in 2007. Don Thomson is modeling one of the looks for the spring show. This is to give you some idea of the look he is looking for. He looks like a rather friendly gangster doesn’t he? |
