On April 22, the House of Delegates met.  Byron Meyers Expressed the 2006 goals for Central District.

             1. To have a net increase in membership for 2006 over 2005.

             2.   To increase the number of directors involved in some form of self improvement.

             3. To have more quartets and choruses entered in spring and fall contest in 2006 than in 2005.

             4. To improve our leadership pool at the chapter level. To be measured by

                          a)  the number of attendees at the Cots event.

b.) chapter responses to District requests for informal s.

c.) increase in number of POD meetings.

d.) increase chapter participation in POD meetings.

             5. For our Chapters to be  more involved with youth singers.

Discussion of goals brought out the importance of retention.  The point was made that reaching out to new people is great, but the key to membership is keeping the present members excited with their work and them enjoying the month to month practices, activities and doing the business of the chapter.

The discussion about contest  participation made the point that the leadership was playing down the competition to be first and instead stressing the need to compete with yourself to learn and improve.  This in turn can give your group a reason to work, practice and become improved singers.

One of the most discussed issues of this meeting was the communication problem raised by discontinuing the hard copy of Serenade.  The Board believes that producing a hard copy is too expensive.  While several people pointed out that lack of communication about district activities at the individual level was missed because of no hard copy.  The Board indicated they understood this and that the new Serenade editor, Jim Williams, was trying to improve the online communication.  Another point was made that not all have internet and/or feel comfortable using it.

The Board recognized this problem.  One suggestion made was that individual chapters make a hard copy locally and distribute it to those that do not have or are uncomfortable in using internet.  The Board also promised a hard copy will be sent in August.  The Board also pointed out that if the president is not getting information, Don Fuson should be contacted and he will work out these problems.

John Marshall, society Board Member, reported on The Barbershop Harmony Society.  He spoke about the recognition that the Central District and Homestead Harmonizers received. He also told  about Harmony University.  It has been moved back to St. Joseph, Mo.  July 30-August 6.  The facilities have been upgraded.   At the midwinter convention, Nashville, Tennessee, was approved as headquarters location for the Barbershop Harmony Society.  An offer has been made to purchase a  down town building.

The Board reported that letters will be sent to chapters that are not in good standing.  I think there are 7 or 8 such chapters  throughout the Central District. Chapters are being encouraged to become more active with youth and to find ways to involve them in Chapter activities and jobs.
