As most of you may have heard by now, our friend and chorus member, Frank Bradley, passed away Sunday evening, July 23, at St Francis hospital in Wichita from complications following surgery to correct an aneurism.  I don’t know much about Frank’s early life other than he was a native Kansan, had a lifelong love of music, and worked for Kansas Farm Bureau Insurance- retiring from there a number of years ago.   I also know that his first wife passed away a number of years ago. About this time was when my contact with Frank began. He met and married Mildred Odom, a widow of a horticultural colleague of mine. As the old saying goes ‘this was when the fun began’.  They were a magical combination.  Frank and Mildred were unique- seeing many situations where someone needed to do something and they were always first to tackle the job. Like Tom Sawyer, they would magically find a lot of other people that would suddenly look around and find themselves painting the fence. Frank and Mildred were already scouting around for more fences to paint. Their Christian concern and discipleship was usually focused right here in our own backyard.

One of the most lasting and important ‘projects’ that Frank and Mildred began was an effort to provide food and clothing, after-school and tutoring programs, and other examples of community support to the people of Ogden. Unfortunately, Mildred passed away several years ago and didn’t live to see the true fruits of their efforts. What began as a small mission activity by 2 has now developed as Ogden Friendship House United Methodist Church with all those programs and more serving people of Ogden. Up until just a few months ago, Frank tirelessly worked to recruit volunteers for Ogden and few would turn him down.  Frank hosted a bible-study group in his home for many years- greeting and welcoming all with concern and caring.

As a barbershopper, Frank was our music librarian for a number of years- doing a necessary but not very sought after job of collecting our music after shows and performances, sorting, and filing it for future use along with getting new music added to our library.  He was always ready with a warm smile, a good laugh, and a friendly greeting. Unfortunately, during the last year Frank’s failing health did not allow him to participate in our chapter activities and I know he missed it badly. On that day when we sang about ‘I’ll Fly Away’ and the chariot swinging low, the heavenly chorus gained a pretty good lead and we lost a good friend and tireless worker. I know what would please Frank the most is that we continue ringing those chords and take some time to help those around us that have needs.

     So long, good friend Frank

The chapter board met Monday July 24th at Westbank Townhouse Clubhouse.

There was a discussion about the chapter's uniform policy.  Chuck Marr will submit a statement of the policy to be included in packets for prospective members and new members.  One important part of the policy is that the chapter will continue to pay $100 of the cost of the tuxedo (including shirt, tie, etc.).  Although no firm rule was set, we need to encourage new members to order their tux before December 1st, because we can get a much better price.  Because of high school proms, the peak demand for tuxedo sales and rentals is April (which happens to be our show time).

The board decided to ask chapter members to donate their Harmonizers two weeks after they get them to permit the Harmonizers to be distributed to local businesses, such as barbershops for their waiting area as reading material to promote barbershop harmony to the public     After some discussion and considering research done by Harvey Kiser, the board set a base ticket price of $15 for the 2007 annual show.

October 19th was set as the date for Guest Night as part of the fall membership campaign.

The Annual Meeting of the chapter will be conducted at the chapter meeting on September 28th.  At that time we will elect officers and board members for 2007.

The next board meeting will be September 11th at 7:30 p.m. at Westbank Townhouse Clubhouse.
