At the most recent chapter board meeting, I agreed to serve the Manhattan chapter as its president for the remainder of this year.   I look forward to an exciting time as we move ever forward in the world of Barbershop Harmony and a cappella singing.  My goal is for each of our members to have as much fun and enjoyment of this hobby and avocation as do I

Board Member
Pat Caffey will assume the office of
Chapter Secretary by further action of your chapter's board of directors.   I'm sure there will be a short learning curve for
Pat, but we applaud his willingness to step in to this most important job as our chapter's legal officer.

The chapter board, at it's special planning meeting
on January 7, laid out a plan of operations, mostly
committing our chapter to those activities and events that will allow our members to participate at whatever level they feel comfortable.  We are hoping that what we have planned will bring increased participation from all members.

We have this challenge to you.  Become involved inour chapter activities, volunteer to help, learn your music, practice your choreography,  support our musical leadership.  Be on time or early for chapter meetings, be agreeable and make yourself be enthusiastic as we work toward our three shows in April.  They're going to be here sooner than you think!

I hope to practice what might be called an "open
presidency".  That simply means that this job is one of service, and I need to know how best to serve your needs.  Please don't hesitate to call or email me with any questions or concerns you have with any phase of our chapter's operations.  We think this chapter is pretty good right now, but your suggestion or comment may allow us to make it better, and as a result Increase your enjoyment and satisfaction of this wonderful hobby

.

Let me assure you that although we will miss past
president
Terry Nanninga contributions to our board meetings and leadership of the chapter, your current board is committed to moving this chapter forward. Please join us as we continue to move onward and upward!

Bob Swenson   President

A message from your new president -
Onward and upward

Justin Riffey is a freshman at Wamego High School. His grandfather Don Riffey approached me about his grandson getting involved in our group. He knew Justin enjoyed singing and he wanted him to have the opportunity to associate with a lot of great guys that enjoy the barbershop style. Don has been a barbershop fan for a number of years. He told me his first date with his wife was to our 1991 Little Apple Chorus show.

Justin sings with choral groups at Wamego High and is also on the golf team. He has learned the show songs quickly and looks forward to singing with the chorus on our spring show. He thinks singing baritone with the Little Apple Chorus is "pretty cool".

Chorus members are enjoying preparing for the spring show. After all, we all enjoy singing and April 29 provides us the opportunity to entertain over 1,000 fans at McCain Auditorium. Some chorus members may not realize all that goes into producing the annual spring show. Ken Lang does a great job preparing us to sing, and everyone knows about the  tremendous work that Don Thomson, Show Co-Chair for Performance, does to arrange and produce the show. Actually, Don does a lot behind the scenes that makes our show special. We can't thank him enough for his effort to make our show an entertaining and professional performance.

Other members have stepped up to do all the different jobs necessary to have a great show. Harvey Kiser is Advertising Chair. He is responsible for all advertising including newspaper and radio ads, as well as other initiatives. He is assisted by Pete Cooper, Program Ads Chair. David Darling is the Marketing Chair. David is responsible for our handbills and posters, the show program, the door prize drawing and the Award of Harmony. Steve Fisher is the Ticket Sales Chair and he is assisted by Charles Martin, Member Ticket Distribution Chair. Steve has interacted with McCain Auditorium to manage the ticket printing and sales process and  is also assisted by Leonard Purvis, who manages the mail order sales. Ken Lyle serves as the Performance Day Chair. He is busy making all the arrangements for a dressing room for the chorus and guest quartet, member make-up, videographer for the show and show ushers. Bill Hanson serves as the After-Glow Chair. His job is expanded this year with the after-glow being open to the public as well as chorus members and families. He will make all arrangements for the facility, refreshments and after-glow program. Bob Swenson made the arrangements for our guest quartet Flip Side and will host them while they are in Manhattan.

I know many others that I haven’t mentioned here are involved in
various ways. We appreciate what everyone does to make our annual show a success.
