Larry Bowers has now returned to his native Kansas after an illustrious life in the education field. He graduated from Munden KS High School where he was a basketball team mate of Manhattan's Dr. Ron Janasek. Larry's educational pursuits found him enrolled at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb where he earned a bachelors degree in Zoology, a Master Degree, and a Doctorate in Educational Administration. His first teaching job was in Downers Grove Illinois where he was a student teacher and Downers Grove liked him so well he spent the next 38 years there, rising to the position of Assistant Superintendent. Later employment stops found him in Lynchburg, Virginia and Miami Beach, Florida. Even after retiring, the school districts of Rolla and Riley Kansas sought his services as Superintendent of Schools for those communities. His distinguished educational career brought many unique experiences, among them being a site visitor for schools vying to obtain designations as "Exemplary Schools Recognition Award" from the US Department of Education, traveling to the Holy Land as a consultant for a private businessman, and writing and presenting a scientific paper for Anita Bryant. Larry's first wife of 39 years, Ruth (Nubby), passed away in 2003. They have a son and daughter now living in Illinois. He married Carolyn Knostman, also widowed, in 2004 which brought an additional 3 stepchildren, 2 in Colorado and 1 in Kansas City, to his extended family. Since he is now fully retired, he enjoys traveling, long distance bicycling, working out at the KSU Recreation Complex, singing, eating out, and playing his trombone. When Larry was in Downers Grove, the local barbershop chapter held their concerts in the high school auditorium. Enjoying the harmony and outstanding quartets planted a thought that someday Larry would like to be a barbershopper. Now that he has the time, you'll see his energetic attitude and smiling face at just about every chapter meeting. Welcome, Larry Bowers, to our chapter and the Little Apple chorus. We hope you enjoy many years of harmony with us. Bob Swenson ♪ |
