Little Apple Chorus

History

Our chorus of acapella singers is part of the International Barbershop Harmony society and we are associated with a district of that society called the Central States District.  Our chapter was ‘chartered’ the Barbershop Harmony Society in 1977 as the Quad County Chorus, later renamed the Grainbelters Chorus and then the Little Apple Barbershop Chorus when Manhattan adopted the logo and little apple theme.  We have held a spring concert every year since our chartering starting at the Manhattan High School auditorium, then in McCain Auditorium on the KSU campus and most recently in Forum Hall of the K-State Student Union.  We currently have about 70 members from not only Manhattan but several communities in Northeast Kansas. Our members range from students to retired and are most have no professional musical training. We practice weekly on Thursday evenings at the Harris Activity Center of 1st Methodist Church. We have a Board of Directors that meet monthly to conduct the business or our organization so that we can have a very brief meeting at our weekly rehearsal to leave time for lots of singing.  We operate essentially as a ‘service club’ in our community since we engaged in a variety of community service activities and projects. We donate scholarships to KSU vocal music students, make grants to area middle and high school vocal music departments, sing at a variety of local venues including performances with the Manhattan Municipal band, special event performances, benefits concerts, and related events not only in Manhattan but in many surrounding communities.
